SSoA CLIMATE FORUM!

We invited students and staffs at SSoA to the Climate Forum which was organised in two parts.

SSoA Climate Forum Part 1: Tuesday 22 June 2021, 2-3pm

SSoA Climate Forum Part 2: Thursday 1 July 2021, 11am-12.30pm

Since 2020-21 we have been meeting as students and staff to reflect on the Climate Emergency and ways to embed sustainability in the curriculum.

We took this time to reflect on the teaching and learning opportunities of the last years’ regarding sustainability, the Students for Climate Action Survey from 2019-20, and to collectively generate ideas for the next academic year.

During the two sessions, we presented ourselves and outcomes so far, and invited participates in engage in a workshops aimed to generate long and short term initiatives and engage in ‘blue sky thinking’ on what could be possible.

An end of year event to celebrate the incredible work and campaigns of Student Climate Groups and organisations across the country.

About this event:

On Wednesday, the 16th of June, StuCAN are hosting an End of Semester Event, hosted by Students for Climate Action Sheffield (SSoA), to celebrate the work of students in tackling the climate and ecological emergency this academic year.

The event looks to discuss actions taken by student groups across the country, potential next steps for the next academic year, and how you can tackle the climate emergency at your institution with advice from guest speakers as well as the Architect’s Climate Action Network (ACAN).

The event will be broken down into 3 sections; part 1 will focus on Climate Activism and existing student action groups, part 2 on wider architectural activism, and part 3 on future ACAN involvement. As part of the event there will also be a facilitated break out room discussion, along with a Q&A session to answer any queries.

Guest Speakers:

You Tell Me Collective, Decolonise Architecture, Sheffield Climate Action Group, SSoA, Westminster Climate Action Group, WestCAN, Newcastle Climate Action Group, NCAN and ACAN Thematic Coordinators.

Earth Overshoot Day Poster-01.jpg

This is the day that if all of humanity consumed like the people in the UK, demand for ecological resources and services surpasses what Earth can regenerate in that year.

Not all countries have an overshoot date, yet in 2020, we exceeded planetary limits in late August. We need to #MoveTheDate.

To mark this day, Students for Climate Action have planned two things:

1. We have created an online quiz which explores reuse, not just of building elements but how other waste streams become building elements! Reducing the material things we consume is a big way to #MoveTheDate. Check it out HERE!

2. All week [if its not raining!] we will be outside the Arts Tower asking you about your studio projects and sustainability: what did you do well, and what do wish you wish you could have done? See you there!

Gary Clarke Talk.jpg

Gary Clark, chair of the RIBA's Sustainable Futures Group, gave a lecture about Embedding Sustainability into the RIBA Plan of Work on the 27th February 2020.

Architecture students need to examine and question how our education is preparing us for combating the climate emergency in our future careers. In the face of these new sustainable outcomes and metrics, how will/should the curriculum be revised so that we have the skills to meet these targets?
